Au passe — Choisir qui prend le plat, et avec quoiL’envoi d’une tâche à un exécutant est devenu un sous-système à part entièreAt the pass — Picking the cook, the pans, and his limitsHanding a task to an executor has become a subsystem of its own

During service, calling a dish out to a cook is no longer enough. Someone has to pick who takes it, on which equipment, what that cook may do, and how the result comes back. In six houses, that sorting has become a station of its own.Routing selects the appropriate executor, model or path and carries the constraints execution needs. Subagents are no longer nested prompts: routing, handoff, model choice, visibility, audit, messaging and return semantics form a distinct harness subsystem. Convergence is rapid across Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Goose, Cline and OpenHands, with wide semantic differences.

Au passe — Chaque maison décide ce que le chef voitSignauxAt the pass — No two houses agree what the chef seesSignals

During service, Stations have names now, and the order names the one that takes it. Passing a dish from one pair of hands to another is called out loud instead of guessed. Whether the chef should see a cook’s every move, or only the plate, is argued about openly. No two houses land in the same place.Named roles and routing metadata appear, then handoff and messaging protocols become explicit. Privacy-versus-auditability tradeoffs emerge as soon as the parent must observe the child. Routing capability and subagent state become tested control surfaces, with wide semantic differences between products.

Au passe — Le plat se cuisine ailleurs, hors du passeMécanismeAt the pass — A second service starts where you cannot seeMechanism

During service, Once you send a dish out, it is not cooked in your head: another pair of hands takes it, at another station. None of that shows at the pass unless it is carried back. Treating the call as the work forgets that a second service has started elsewhere.Delegation creates a second execution graph. Identity, permissions and results must be correlated with the parent without crushing autonomy or auditability. The deception is that delegation presents itself as a continuation of the parent prompt, while the executor holds its own identity and its own rights.

Au passe — Fixer d’avance ce que le passe voitRéponseAt the pass — The cook’s name travels with the orderResponse

During service, Name the cook, name what their hands may reach, name the shape the work comes back in. Settle beforehand how much of them the pass sees: enough to answer for the plate, no more. Whatever returns has to stay tied to the order it came from.Treat delegation as a typed lifecycle, with explicit parent-child identity and bounded observability. Routing must carry the constraints execution needs — executor, model, path, permissions — instead of letting the child re-derive them. Correlate results and audit back to the parent without removing the executor's autonomy.

Au passe — Le commis rend son propre compteLeçonAt the pass — The dish now belongs to another stationLesson

During service, A dish sent out leaves your hands entirely. Someone else holds it now, at their own station, under their own rights, and owes their own account of it.A subagent is a distinct execution identity, not a continuation of the parent prompt. Routing must therefore transport constraints rather than assume they are inherited.
